Law Firms Can Get Publicity from Their High Profile Cases

Solicitors often find themselves handling cases of public interest that would enable to them to get media coverage and help with their law firm marketing.

Each case will different of course and so will need to be handled differently.

The best case scenario is when you are dealing with a confident client who is happy to speak to the media. The solicitor can then simply write a press release outlining the main points of the case and describing what part his law firm played in bringing it to a successful conclusion.

The media will then probably want to speak to your client as well to get his reaction to the outcome and to explain how the case has affected him.

This can sometimes prove a problem in terms of marketing your law firm, however, because if your client comes across well, the media may focus entirely on him and neglect to even mention your firm and the part you played.

You can usually get round this by providing good quotes outlining the significance of the case and how it may be important to other people in future. This makes it more likely that the media will quote your directly and give your law firm a mention.

Of course, there is always the chance that your client refuses to allow any publicity about the case. Your options are limited if this happens but if the case is interesting enough, you may still be able to get some valuable publicity by writing about the significance of the case without revealing the identities of the people involved.

This should still enable you to market your firm. Ironically, it may even provide you with better publicity because the client is no longer on the scene acting as the main focus of the media's attention.

Another potentially difficult situation that sometimes occurs is that the client may not be in the right frame of mind to deal with the media, even if he is willing to do so. Clients can be vulnerable after a traumatic court case and sometimes need to be protected from saying something to the media that they may regret later.

This can cause a crisis of conscience for a solicitor with an eye for a law firm marketing opportunity. If you feel that your client is unable to stand up to media scrutiny then obviously you should advise them against getting involved.

However, many clients want to be heard because they want everyone to know what they have been through.

One way to deal with this kind of situation is to write a press release that gives all the information we mentioned earlier. This could give the client's name but then make it clear that he doesn't wish to speak directly to the media and all supplementary questions should be directed to you, his solicitor.

This would enable the client to be heard without being personally subjected to media pressure. It also, of course, means that you can continue to market your law firm.
